The Team Parent is one of the most important parts of each team.  By becoming a team parent, you play a significant role in the children's soccer season and will be instrumental in ensuring that each and every child on your team walks away from this year's season with a positive and happy experience.  This time next year, the children may not remember their coaches names, but they do remember their team party and look at their trophies and awards with a feeling of accomplishment and a job well done.

We at AYSO have a strong belief in the role of the Team Parent and our main goal throughout the season is to ensure that each and every child in AYSO has a memorable time.  Thanks for volunteering as a Team Parent and we all look forward to working with you this year. This page has Team Parent information and resources that should help make your job a success.

Team Parent General Duties

  1. Order team banner.
  2. Make up refreshment schedule.
  3. Phone parents to remind them when it's their turn to bring refreshments.
  4. Coordinate with the Division Coordinator on Info Booth schedules and inform parents of when and where they are to volunteer.
  5. Coordinate Team Picture Schedule and Hand out team photos.
  6. Plan end-of-season parties.
  7. Collect money from parents for coaches gifts and/or player awards.
  8. Help the coach with phone calls concerning change or cancellation of practice, etc, throughout the season.
  9. Ask other parents to help whenever possible.

Ordering Team Banner

Although team banners are not mandatory, we encourage each team to have one, either home-made or purchased from a vendor. Banners are a symbol of the team and should be displayed proudly at each game. The banner brings a sense of pride and unity to the team, and the kids LOVE to see their names "up in lights"!

There is a list of vendors at the bottom of this page who supply the air-brushed banners at a reasonable cost. If you choose to order a banner, please order as soon as possible so your team will have the banner on their sideline for all games. When ordering your banner, please make sure to include your players names, coaches names, team parents name, and sponsor (if applicable). Have the kids help pick out any applicable artwork and involve them in any other choices the vendor gives you with the banner.

If your team chooses to make your banner, design it during practice, getting suggestions from parents and players. The kids love to get involved. Purchase materials needed: felt (inexpensive type) and seam binding, PVC pipe, paint, etc. Collect contributions from players parents to help defray the costs. Sizes vary, but the usual is about 3' x 4'. Use team colors, include the team name, symbol, players names, coaches names, team parent name, and sponsor name (if applicable).

Someone from your team (check with your coach, he/she may already have one) will need to supply a banner stand. These can be made quickly and inexpensively using PVC pipe.

At the end-of-the-year party, the banner can either be raffled off, or cut up and each player given his/her name from the banner.

Refreshment Schedule

Each game, some member of the team should bring refreshments for half-time and for after the game. As a courtesy to the coach, please refrain from including them in the half-time and end-of-game refreshment schedule, unless they specifically request to be included.

Suggested items are quartered oranges for half-time, iced drinks for after the game (bring extra for coaches) and a snack for after the game (granola bars, etc). It's also a good idea to bring extra if it looks like your team has a lot of younger siblings.

It works well to note on the game schedule each players name next to the game date he/she is to bring refreshments, then photocopy the game schedule for each player. This way, the refreshment schedule is on the same piece of paper as the game schedule.

Call the assigned player/parent no later than Thursday of the stated week to remind them of their turn to bring snacks.

If no one has brought refreshments, notify the snack bar or other team parents of your need as soon as you realize there is none. Don't wait until the games have started to take care of the situation.

Info Booth Schedule

Each team will be assigned periods to help out at the Information Booth. There should be two representatives from each team to help out.

Begin preparing a list of volunteers from your team as soon as possible. Drop reminders early enough so parents can plan on helping out.

Picture Day

This year, picture day will be held on a regular game day, see the Calendar page for exact date. Please make sure all parents realize this and plan accordingly. We don't want the players going home after their game and missing getting their picture taken if hasn't been yet.

Make sure to bring your team banner to Picture Day.

Pictures will be given to the Team Parents (or Coaches) for distribution to the team. Check with your coach - some prefer to give pictures out during the end-of-season party.

End-of-Season Party

This is one of the most (if not the most) important events during the entire soccer season. Each child eagerly anticipates the end-of-season party and although we do not require it, we greatly encourage every team to have some sort of get together at the end of the season.

Ask parents to pitch in and share the cost. Use this time to present awards to players and gifts to coaches. One helpful suggestion to save money for the party is to have a collection can (goal jar) at each game day throughout the season. Each time a goal is scored by your team, a contribution (usually a quarter) is made by each team member's family. this money is usually held by the team parent and helps defray the cost at the end of the year.

Pizza - Try to go to a restaurant sponsoring AYSO soccer if possible. Phone a couple weeks ahead (if possible) to reserve places. Be sure to announce an ending time so that you are not waiting for kids to be picked up. Better yet, make it a family affair.

Picnic - Have a potluck/barbecue at the park or someone's home following your last game. Plan some activities to keep things interesting.

Trophies/Awards - Everyone deserves some type of award, whether it be trophies, medals, pins, etc. Check with your parents to determine their thoughts on the cost and then plan accordingly. The children truly value and expect some type of award and are disappointed when they find they don't have the opportunity to receive one. For your convenience, there are some phone numbers from various trophy and award companies listed at the bottom of this page. They will have great ideas for your needs.

Messages/Phone Calls

Work with the coach to relay information to the team members.

It may be helpful to set up a telephone tree to help with phone calls, especially on larger teams in the upper divisions.

Team Parent Helpers

Each team has a whole sideline of parents each game. Team parents now have the opportunity to really help the coaches out by having the other parents help setup the nets and corner flags. By doing this, it gives the coaches the amount of time needed to fully warm up the team thus avoiding possible injuries, giving final thoughts for the game, and getting to know their team a bit better.
