When is registration for the AYSO Region 1046 soccer fall and winter seasons?

Registration typically opens for the Fall season in early May, with a final registration day in mid-August.  Registration for the Winter season opens in the last few weeks of the Fall season and closes around Thanksgiving. See the registration page for detailed information.

A registration fee and registration form is required for each player.  All players must be registered with the Region, prior to participating in any practice or games, and they must be placed on a team by the Region's Team Balance Coordinators - no exceptions!

What is and is not included in the registration fees?

The registration fees for a season cover 8 to 10 weeks of soccer and include a full uniform of a jersey, shorts, and socks. See the registration page for detailed information. Also included is a subscription to Soccer Now magazine, access to fields for practice and play, training and equipment for coaches and referees. Photos are included in the season fee, but trophies are at additional expense and at the discretion of the parent and team.

Players are expected to provide their own appropriate footwear, shin guards, appropriate size soccer ball, and a water bottle.

Why doesn't AYSO allow me to specify a team for my child(ren)?

Two of the mission statements of AYSO are "Balanced Teams" and "Everyone Plays".  These two philosophies become very important when you consider the goal of operating a soccer program where young people can learn to develop a positive self-image, self confidence and other positive character traits through their interest and participation in soccer.  We want to achieve this goal with all kids.   If kids were able to choose a specific team, then some teams would get stacked with experienced players.  This would really diminish the image of soccer for the less experience teams.  It is much more fun for everyone to play (and watch) close, evenly matched games, rather than "blow-outs".  Therefore, we strive to balance the skill level of the teams during team assignment. In the past we have tried to accomodate geographical associations, but this has been resulting in the same teams being played year after year and so we will have to back off from this policy.

Where can I find lost soccer balls?

AYSO Region 1046 keeps all lost items at the concession stand or field monitor station at each of the fields. Hopefully, you will find what you are looking for there.

What is "offside" in soccer?

Yes, that's right, it is "offside", not "offsides".  Offside is law #11 and is one of the most misunderstood of the 17 laws of soccer.  It is one of the biggest reasons that referees get yelled at!  I hope the following helps explain what a player in an offside position and an offside violation really is all about.

Click here for an excellent ANIMATED description of the offside rule.

The following is Reprinted from "The Rules of Soccer: Simplified", by Bill Mason and Larry Maisner, 1997 - 1998 Edition:

OFFSIDE POSITION and OFFSIDE are not the same.  It is not against the rules to be merely in offside position.  It is against the rules to be offside.

OFFSIDE POSITION - A player is in an offside position if:

·         the player is in the opponents' half of the field, and

·         the player is closer to the opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent.

A player is not in an offside position if the player is:

·         in his or her own half of the field of play, or

·         even with or behind the ball, or

·         even with the second-to-last opponent, or the last two opponents.

OFFSIDE - With certain exceptions, a player in an offside position becomes offside if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by a teammate, the player, in the opinion of the referee, is involved in active play by:

·         interfering with play, or

·         interfering with an opponent, or

·         gaining an advantage by being in that offside position.

EXCEPTIONS - Although in an offside position, a player is not offside if the player receives the ball directly from a:

·         goal kick, or

·         throw-in, or

·         corner kick.

The position of a player at the moment the ball is played by a teammate determines whether the player may be called offside.  For example, a player positioned onside at the moment the ball is played by a teammate does not become offside by running to an offside position while the ball is in flight.

If a pass is intended for a teammate in an offside position and an opponent deflects the pass, offside must still be called.  (The offside infraction occurs the moment the pass is served.)

If a player is called offside, an indirect free kick is taken by the opposing team from the position of the offside player.

A player who leaves the field, attempting to cause an opponent to be in an offside position, must be cautioned for unsporting behavior.

A player in an offside position is allowed to leave the field to indicate to the referee that he or she is not participating in play, and should not be called offside.

YES - shinguards are required for every game and practice.  Coaches will not allow a player to practice or play in a game without shinguards.
